Bomb kills teen girl at Italy school, others hurt

Police are on the hunt for suspects after a bomb exploded outside an Italian high school. NBC’s Lester Holt reports.

By NBC News and msnbc.com news services

Updated at 9.10 a.m ET: An explosion at a school in Italy Saturday killed a teenage girl and injured several others, according to reports and officials.

The blast happened at 7:45 a.m. at a school in Brindisi as students were waiting to go inside, NBC News reported.

The high school, which?is opposite a court in the city,?is named after the slain anti-Mafia prosecutor Giovanni Falcone and his wife, Francesca Morvillo, a judge who was also killed in the 1992 bombing in Sicily by Cosa Nostra.?

One of the wounded students, a girl who was walking alongside the victim outside the school in Brindisi, was reported in critical condition after surgery.

Officials said at least seven students were injured, but some news reports put the figure at 10.?

Brindisi’s Perrino hospital, where the wounded were taken, declined to give out information by phone.?

Dr. Paola Ciannamea, a Perrino physician who helped treat the injured at the hospital, told reporters there that one of the injured was a teenage girl who was in grave but stable condition after surgery.

She added that plastic surgery was still being performed on some of the other injured, who suffered burns in the blast.?

No claim of responsibility
An unidentified hospital official, briefing reporters there, said the critically injured student was in stable condition after surgery and that several of the injured students had suffered burns and is undergoing plastic surgery.?

Notebooks are seen scattered at the site where an explosive device went off near the Francesca Morvillo Falcone High School in Brindisi, Italy, Saturday.

There were no immediate claims of responsibility.?

Italy has been marking the 20th anniversary of the Sicilian highway attack, but it was unclear if there was an organized crime link to Saturday’s explosion.?

In Brindisi, local civil protection agency official Fabiano Amati said a female student died of her wounds after being taken to a hospital and at least seven other students were hospitalized.?

Interior Minister Anna Maria Cancellieri, in charge of domestic security, said she was “struck” by the fact that the school was named after the slain hero and his wife, but she cautioned that investigators at that point “have no elements” to blame the school attack on organized crime.?

“It’s not the usual (method) for the Mafia,” she told Sky television in a phone interview. The Sicilian-based Cosa Nostra usually targets specific figures, such as judges, prosecutors, turncoats or rival mobsters in attacks, and not civilian targets such as schools.?

“The big problem now is to get intelligence” on the attack, said Cancellieri. She added that she had spoken by phone with Italian Premier Mario Monti, in the United States for the G-8 summit.?

Outside the school, textbooks, their pages flipping in a breeze, notebooks and a backpack littered the street near where the bomb exploded. At the sound of the blast, students already inside the building ran outside of the school to see what happened.?

Officials initially said the device was in a trash bin outside the Morvillo-Falcone school, but later the ANSA news agency, reporting from Brindisi, said the device, consisting of three cooking-gas canisters, a detonator and possibly a timer, had been placed on a low wall ringing the school. The wall was damaged and charred from the blast.?

Public high schools in Italy hold classes on Saturday mornings.?

Specializes in fashion, social services
A school official, Valeria Vitale, told Sky that most of the pupils were girls. The school specializes in training for jobs in fashion and social services, she said.?

The bombing also follows a number of attacks against Italian officials and government or public buildings by a group of anarchists, which prompted authorities to assign bodyguards for 550 individuals and deploy 16,000 law enforcement officers nationwide.?

Minister Cancellieri indicated that after the school blast, authorities’ sense of what could be a possible target had been tested.?

“Anything now could be a ‘sensitive’ target,” she said.?

Austerity measures, spending cuts and new and higher taxes, all part of economist Monti’s plan to save Italy from succumbing to the debt crisis roiling Greece, have angered many citizens, and social tensions have ratcheted up.?

“The economic crisis doesn’t help,” Cancellieri said, referring to the tensions.?

Brindisi is a lively port town in Puglia, the region in the southeastern “heel” of the Italian boot-shaped peninsula. An organized crime syndicate known as the Sacred United Crown, has been traditionally active there, but crackdowns have been widely considered by authorities to have lessened the organization’s power in the region.

How to Get Used to Wearing Contact Lenses

Contact lenses are used by many people to help correct their vision on a daily basis, but sometimes it isn?t always an easy transition.? There?s a definite difference between wearing contacts and wearing glasses and for many people it takes some getting used to.? The fact that you must position contact lenses directly on your eyeball makes some people squeamish, and even once you get past that, perfecting the process can take time.? Even so, the freedom and natural look of contact lenses makes the effort more than worthwhile for people ready to ditch their glasses.

Sometimes, getting used to wearing contact lenses is just a matter of wearing them several times until your eyes become used to the process.? Just like any new thing, your eyes might take some time to get used to having a little foreign body resting on the cornea all the time.? Of course, it?s imperative that you follow some basic hygiene requirements as part of wearing your contacts or you?ll never completely get used to them.

Keeping your hands clean every time you handle your contact lenses is important hygiene rule number one.? Dirty hands can transfer bacteria to the lenses which will end up inside your eyes.? Once you start getting dirt and bacteria in your eyes, it will lead to irritation and possibly infection.? Wash your hands well and dry them on a lint-free towel anytime you?re about to handle the contacts.?

One strategy to help you get used to wearing your contact lenses is to wear them for shorter periods of time when you first start wearing them.? As they start to feel more comfortable in your eyes, gradually wear them longer and longer until you can wear them for the whole day.? If you really need vision correction all the time, try wearing glasses during the times the contacts are out of your eyes.? This way, you?ll still be able to see well, but can give your eyes a break in the transition period.? Many people will already have a pair of glasses they wore originally.?

Another thing that makes people take longer to get used to contact lenses is dryness.? Dryness is a common problem among contact lens wearers and keeping moisture in your eyes is an important step in getting used to wearing them.? You can use specific lenses that are designed to retain moisture or you can add drops to your eyes or to the contacts as part of the daily preparation.? It?s also important to make sure that the lenses are centered on your iris for maximum comfort as off-center lenses will increase your discomfort.

?If you have the means and the time, experiment with a few different brands and styles until you find one that is comfortable to you.? It may take a little time, but if you?re determined you?ll find a way to wear your contact lenses so it feels as if you?re wearing nothing at all.?

Florida judge says rapper Campbell should coach

A state administrative law judge says former 2 Live Crew frontman Luther Campbell should be allowed to coach football in Florida schools.

Judge Robert Meale made his recommendation Tuesday.

The state refused to certify the 51-year-old rapper although he’s been volunteering as an assistant coach with local approval in Miami. Education officials cited his songs’ raunchy lyrics, a string of arrests and a performance with two women who removed their clothing in South Carolina.

Meale noted the charges were dropped, except for a couple misdemeanor gun crimes more than 25 years ago. He also wrote that Campbell has coached inner city youth and high school football without incident for years.

Campbell can take his case to an appellate court if Education Commissioner Gerard Robinson rejects Meale’s recommendation.

Jawbone Big Jambox

Last year, headset vet Jawbone stepped into the wireless speaker market with the Jambox ($199.99, 3.5 stars), a portable Bluetooth speaker that doubles as a speakerphone accessory. Now, the company is taking the idea and making it bigger with the Big Jambox ($299.99 direct), a larger, heavier, and more-powerful speaker. For $100 more, it bumps the Jambox up from a good portable personal speaker to one that could easily drive a small party or handle a conference call for a large group. The sound quality isn’t quite as clear and robust as what you get with the Editors’ Choice Bose SoundLink Wireless Mobile Speaker ($299.95, 4 stars), but a long battery life and a handy speakerphone feature make the Big Jambox a top choice if you’re looking for a wireless speaker to take with you.

Design
Like the Jambox before it, the Big Jambox is a blocky brick of a speaker. It measures 3.6 by 10.1 by 3.2 inches (HWD) and weighs 3.2 pounds, dwarfing the Jambox ‘s 6.0 by 2.2 by 1.6 inches and 12 ounces. (In the photo below, the original Jambox is on the left.) Available in red, black, or white, the speaker is surrounded by a metal grille, and slightly rubberized panels on the left and right sides help protect it in transit. It features most of its controls on its top side, including Playback and Volume buttons along with a Jawbone button for accessing various smart features including voice dialing and battery status. The right side holds a Power button and button for Bluetooth pairing, plus a 3.5mm output, microUSB port, and a power plug connector.

Pairing a smartphone, tablet, or other Bluetooth device with the Big Jambox is simple. When you first turn on the speaker it will automatically enter pairing mode, and after you’ve paired it with one device you can pair it with additional devices by holding the pairing button. You can also connect an audio device directly to the Big Jambox through the 3.5mm input with the included cable. The microUSB port is solely for updating the Big Jambox’s software, since unlike the Jambox, which charged via USB, it has a dedicated power jack and AC adapter. As a Bluetooth device, the range of the speaker is about 30 feet. According to Jawbone, the Big Jambox can last up to 15 hours on a single charge, much longer than, say, the Bose SoundLink, which is rated to last eight hours at moderate listening levels. I ran all of my tests on the Big Jambox, and after three days it still said the battery is “about full.” It actually said that. Pressing the Jambox button summons a female robotic voice that can tell you battery status.

Jawbone Big Jambox

Performance
The Big Jambox sounds clear, and its larger size and more power lets it get much louder than the Jambox. I filled the 5,000-square-foot PC Lab with music by cranking the volume to max, and while my fellow editors preferred “Bye Bye Birdie” to Glenn Benton, most everyone heard both the show tunes and death metal. Vocals and strings sounded crisp but slightly bright, and midrange notes were full and accurate.

Our bass test track, The Knife’s “Silent Shout,” sounded deep and forceful. The low end sounded slightly crunchy, and other bass-heavy songs like the Beastie Boys’ “Shake Your Rump” distorted slightly when the volume was turned up to maximum level. The Big Jambox is still a portable speaker, though, so don’t expect driving sound to rock a room. It can deliver music to a small party, but it won’t compete with a larger iPod dock or a full sound system.

In my test calls with an Apple iPhone 4S, voice call quality was clear, and the 360-degree microphone and larger size of the Big Jambox make it great for conference calls. Voices are picked up by the speaker easily at normal levels, and callers can be heard very loudly with the volume turned up.?

The Jawbone Big Jambox doesn’t quite deliver the power and clarity of our Editors’ Choice wireless portable speaker, the Bose SoundLink Wireless Mobile Speaker, and it’s three times more expensive than some other wireless options like the Logitech Mini Boombox ($99.99, 4 stars), but it works well as a speakerphone and boasts a long battery life, which is key for a portable speaker. The Beats By Dre Beatbox Portable ($449.95, 3.5 stars) offers stronger audio quality given its larger size, but it requires six D-cell batteries to be portable. If you value flexibility over audiophile-grade sound quality, the Big Jambox should be at the top of your list.

HP t410 AIO Smart Zero Client does single-wire Power over Ethernet, no power cord required

Image

Now, we don’t normally cover this sort of networking equipment, but we were quite impressed by HP’s new t410 All-in-One Smart Zero Client after we spoke to its proud product manager Walt Jurek. First of all, this isn’t an AIO desktop PC, nor is it an LCD monitor — well, if you’re unfamiliar with thin clients, just think of this as an 18.5-inch, 1,366 x 768 LED-backlit monitor (featuring a 3M technology for the 200 nit brightness — our money’s on the Uniformity Tape) that uses just one Ethernet cable to get both its 13W power from a PoE (Power over Ethernet) switch, as well as data connection over Citrix, Microsoft or VMWare protocol. The t410 can automatically detect the virtualization environment and then reprogram its digital signal processor when needed, meaning less manual work for the admin (in theory, anyway). More after the break.

Why does Norway’s Breivik invoke the Knights Templar? (+video)

Anders Behring Breivik, who killed 77 people in a twin terror attack in Norway last July, claims to be a member of a reborn ‘Knights Templar.’ What’s the symbolism?

One of the highlights of today’s testimony in the trial of Anders Behring Breivik, who is accused of the murder of 77 people during a bombing and shooting rampage in Norway, was the prosecutor’s efforts to challenge Mr. Breivik’s purported membership in the “Knights Templar.”

Skip to next paragraph A sociologist for the defense talks about Andrew Breivik’s world view.

Breivik claims to have helped “refound” the ancient military order as a force to fight immigration and multiculturalism in Europe. But why turn to a long-gone Christian order to symbolize his agenda today?

The Knights Templar, or “Templars,” were a Christian order founded in the 10th century. Named for the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, the Templars initially protected pilgrims traveling through the Holy Lands, but eventually evolved into a powerful military force that waged war against the Muslims during the Crusades.

The Templars became so powerful, however, that European leaders grew to distrust the order. Early in the 1300s, King Philip IV of France launched a crackdown on the Templars that, with the help of Pope Clement V, eventually spread Europe-wide, destroying the order. Many members were tortured and tried for heresy by the Catholic Church.

But despite, or perhaps because of, their ancient history and sudden demise, the Templars still hold a solid grip on modern imaginations and pop culture. They are frequently depicted as the mysterious controllers of the world in books like Umberto Eco’s “Foucault’s Pendulum” and movies like “National Treasure.” “The Da Vinci Code” and “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” set the Templars up as secret keepers of the Holy Grail. They even appear as the enemies in video games like “Assassin’s Creed.”

Certainly, the organization that Breivik claims to be a member of is equally mysterious. Breivik describes the organization as “a leaderless network, made to be self-driven cells.? He said that ?For militants, [Knights Templar] is meant to be a version of Al Qaeda.” He has yet to name another member of the group, claiming that to do so would risk their being caught, though he has indicated that his “English mentor” can be found in London and that a Serb “war hero” living in Liberia is among the group’s ranks.

Whether or not the Templars in which Breivik claims membership are real, the name is likely meant to evoke both the mysterious nature of the original Templars and their open war against Muslim forces during the Crusades. The historical Templars’ modern reputation and supposed influence makes a strong symbolic counterpoint to terrorist groups like Al Qaeda.

Monitor guest blogger James Bosworth suggested that the use of the name may also be meant to legitimize the group as a moral one.

Last July, Mr. Bosworth noted that Breivik was not the first violent criminal to invoke the Templars: A Mexican criminal gang has also adopted the name and some of the associated symbolism. But Bosworth concludes that “The Mexican Knights Templar code of conduct appears to be a false appeal to Mexico’s citizens,” something that could also be argued of Breivik’s use of the Templar mythology. “The Knights Templar label is a failed attempt to grant historical legitimacy to a violent act that truly has no justification,” Bosworth wrote.
